Recognizing And Managing Cervical Lordosis Conditions

There is an inward curvature in the spine in the neck region of a human being. It is normal to have a curvature there, there are cases when this inward curvature is exaggerated and causes abnormality. This condition is referred to as Cervical Lordosis. While the correct and natural curvature of the neck region helps in weight bearing and shock absorption capabilities, an abnormal curvature also normally does not cause any major pain and disability in the human body. This is why the condition of cervical lordosis is left undiscovered in many patients for many years. This condition is often diagnosed at the time of some routine examination which may not be related to any back pain or cervical spine pain in the body. Lordosis generally occurs in the lumbar region of the body but in few cases it may also occur in the spine region.

In a typical cervicallordosis condition the patient when looked at carefully may appear to be having an extended neck in a forward direction and their chin may also become prominent in some cases. Head of the patient may appear to be slightly lower in between the shoulders. As generally there is no pain associated with these conditions, a patient of this condition may not realize about his deformity for years or may only come to know about it by their postural abnormalities. Only very few patients who have a severe abnormal lordotic curve may suffer from pain in their neck or back region.

Cervical Lordosis may also be caused due to age factors and due to the excess wear and tear of bones in the neck region. This results in degenerative cervical lordosis and is best managed with the help of physical therapies and postural corrections. Although the physical exercises may not be able to correct the curve but it will help to obtain a much more normal looking posture. The physical exercises and therapies are somewhat same with those that are prescribed for arthritis treatment.

Generally lordosis is not a problematic condition and as such lordosis treatment is not very necessary except in rare cases when the lordosis is too severe and may cause chronic pain to the patient. Apart from the conservative treatment options such as pain management, physical therapies and using a back brace, in some normal curvatures surgery may be unavoidable. Under such circumstances, spinal fusion surgery is the most recommended process but it is also not free from additional complications and side effects. So, one must avoid surgery in cervical lordosis treatment as long as possible.

However, patients with abnormal lordosis curvature must take guidance from medical practitioner. As there are no known symptoms of cervical lordosis apart from the improper posture and curve, one must consult a doctor as soon as they feel any pain in the region.
